Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, admitted Saturday to having an extramarital affair during his first marriage. The admission comes after the Daily Mail reported that Emhoff and his ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff, separated after Doug got the nanny of the couple’s daughter pregnant.

“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions,” Emhoff said in a statement to CNN on Saturday. “I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.”

Emhoff and his first wife were married from 1992 to 2009. The couple have two children together, Cole, 29 and Ella, 25, who they co-parent along with Harris.

According to the report from the Daily Mail, the nanny, Najen Naylor, did not deny the report when asked for comment. In addition to being the couple’s nanny, Taylor was a teacher at Emhoff’s school.

A “close friend with knowledge of the pregnancy” told the outlet that Naylor did not keep the child.

Emhoff and his wife Kerstin separated in 2009 after the affair was discovered. Sources told the Daily Mail that Mayor had to leave her job as a teacher at The Willows, an elite private elementary school in Culver City, California. She had been teaching the Emhoff children and moonlighting as a nanny for the couple.

It is unclear what happened to the baby, or whether Emhoff had any involvement in the baby’s life.

Harris and Emhoff met in 2013, while Harris was serving as attorney general in California, and were married a year later. Harris knew about the affair before the marriage, and the Biden Campaign was became aware of it during the vetting process in 2020.

“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago,” Kerstin Emhoff said in a statement to CNN. “He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala and I have built together.
